Cool Facts and Ivory Info

bullet

Scrimshaw in Mammoth Ivory is created by minute cuts in the ivory that are filled with India Ink.

bullet

The ivory comes from the Dawson City Area, where surface washing (plaser) Gold mines uncover the mammoth ivory.

bullet

A  prominent feature of a mammoth were the tusks, curved and very long--for the largest males, up to around 15 1/2 feet (4.8 meters).

bullet

Most mammoths became extinct around 10,000 years ago.

bullet

The material being used has lain in the ground for as little as 5000 years. The tusks are actually mineralized taking on new properties, making this fossil much harder than fresh ivory. This material is not rock, it is not petrified. It takes a polish well and finishes beautifully.

bullet

In color alone there is a clear distinction from modern or fresh Ivory, the tones are much deeper in the fossil ivory

Fred Watmoughs' first piece of Scrimshaw was done in the mid 80’s. Pointillism began early 90’s.
